I always think in the back of my mind that it'd be fun to pull it back out and run it through it again after all these years. I never do though. But I should soon, really. It was an awesome gaming experience, probably what really got me interested in RPGs. I even managed to do all the chocobo breeding to get the Knights of the Round summon spell. Ah, those were days--when all I had to worry about was maybe finishing my homework and levelgrinding with Cloud, Barrett, and Yuffie (though in my version I renamed everyone with Greek/Roman gods; I think Cloud was Zeus, Barrett was Odin, and Aerith was Athena, but I can't remember the rest). Does anyone else love this game as much as I do? Please, share your thoughts.

It's all about the games

Mario and others doing "Wassssup"

Even though this "wassssup" joke ran its course back in the late 90s and early 00s (early 00s?), this still made me laugh. That blip is Beyond Good and Evil, and goshdarndammit it should have been a blasting kaboom for what it's worth.

I had purchased this game a year or so ago for no more than $20, played it like a rabbit in heat, and then...well, forgot about it for a bit after other things came along. Regardless, I've been working on trying to finish some old games before purchasing new ones (a sort of attempt at a resolution for 2007) and so I popped it in over the weekend, got myself readjusted to the controls, and quickly beat the game within a couple hours.

The Basics
The plot for Beyond Good and Evil goes as follows: The planet of Hillys is constantly attacked by members of the alien DomZ army. The citizens are protected by a military group called The Alpha Section, which put a stop to these attacks once they happen. I grow suspicious already. And for good reasoning: turns out that the Alpha Section are working with the DomZ to kidnap folks from Hillys to perform evil, scientificky (yes, it's not a word but it should be) science experiments on them. It then falls upon the many shoulders of the IRIS network, a hodgepodge of journalists bent on exposing the truth of things, to save Hillys from further attacks. How Jade becomes a member of the IRIS network is pivotal to the plot, and quite fun, so I will not spoil it here. But as she gets further and further into her investigations, even more horrible truths begin to flourish.

The Good
The single reason I bought Dark Cloud 2 was I'd read a lot about how much fun taking photos in-game was, and though you can't make cool armor from frying pans and barrels in Beyond Good and Evil, Jade's photojournalism skills do add a lot to the game. During your hop/skip/sneak around Hillys, Jade has the opportunity to photograph some of the natural wildlife. This isn't simply for some zoo yearbook though. Hillys is a world consisting of a wide variety of people, including pigs, birds, walruses, cows, and rhinos, among others. There's also a plethora of non-sentient animal life, such as reptiles, fish, and insects. So there's plenty of things to snapshot.

A large chunk of the game is spent in your boat/spaceship, which opens up exploration in otherwise inexcessible locations. It also allows you to enter races, which aren't actually all that exciting, but do give you something else to do if you're stuck on a certain part. The boat controls nicely, and from it you'll see some of the best visuals in the game: shimmering water with the sun setting in the distance, moonlight buildings at night, a purple sky twinkling away as you lift off and out of the planet...

The Bad
The fighting system is a bit bland. Jade's arsenal of attacks is very limited, and the autolocking system can be frustrating at times. I wished there'd been other moves she could learn for battle, or, even more so, that there'd been less fighting. The focus should have been on sneaking around and reporting. Also, it would have been nice if you could actually create a photobook with shots you'd acquired during the game. Instead they feel like one-time things. Take correct picture, get reward, forget about said picture, take next correct picture.
The game's ending leaves things open for a possible sequel. Why is this in The Bad? Because a sequel will never happen. Not now, not tomorrow, not ever. And that's just sad.

The Fugly
Towards the end of the game, something went wrong. The voice acting and subtitles did not match up to the cutscenes. Sometimes it looked as if another character was saying someone else's lines, which, when one character is a chick with green lips and the other, well, a pig, makes things seem a bit off. Even more so than it already is. Other than that, not much fugly.

The Overall Vibe
It's a great game that went severely unnoticed, but that shouldn't put you off if you're the least bit interested in it. It's got a lot to it. There's action, racing, stealth, mystery, treachery...you name it. I wished the game had been longer, and I wished there was some sort of New Game+ system or whatever that allowed you to play in the game world after completing all the missions, but really, that's just small stuff. Get it. Surprisingly, I've seen it on shelves in a bunch of different stores. Well worth the twenty bucks (could be less by now!) and your time. This gets my official approval.

Bad me

Oops, been neglecting the videogame blog. And normally I hate when I have to spend hours running around, hunting mob after mob after mob, but for once I'm really enjoying it. There's just so much to this game, it's crazy.

I was romping around one underground dungeon, just raising my stats, when I stumbled upon a rare monster that was way more powerful than my team. I had to use everything I had at it, but it was worth. I just like stuff like that; it completely surprised me.

And soon I have to fight an ancient dragon along with some walking trees. Namely, Dark Cloud 2 and Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. And now they have Rogue Galaxy, a sci-fi themed action RPG, coming out in January 2007 for the PS2. What do I mean by serious gaming? Well, beating some games I've been wanting to finish because ever since I've bought FFXII I've promised myself not to purchase any new games until I finish up some old ones. So here's what I want to work on:

Final Fantasy XII (I doubt I'll beat it any time soon, but there's nothing wrong with putting in more hours with this rich, deeply beautiful game)

Suikoden V (I'm pretty much near the end, but I still have about 30 to 40 characters to collect, which, me being me, is a must)

God of War (I'm right at the end, but I tried to battle Ares...mmm...about twenty times with no success)

Dragon Quest VII (I've already put in a good 40 hours into the game, but I got kind of bored with it after awhile)

Shadow of the Colussus (I took a break from playing around the sixth or seventh boss)

Wild Arms 3 (Again, just got bored with it after awhile)

Hmm...four out of six of those are RPGs. I guess I just don't have the attention span for long games like I used to. It's not that these were terrible games that I couldn't stand playing. They just lost my interest after a few hours. Except for FFXII...I'm absolutely loving this game. What a gorgeous and amazing way to go out on the PS2!

Nintendo sells 600,000 Wii consoles

...in just eight days!

And I'm not one of those 600,000 Wii-playing gamers! Thinking back on this matter, I can only recall a few games that I either preordered and/or actually went out to the store to purchase the moment they came out, fingers shaking as I brought the game home with me, much, I assume, like a parent feels bringing home a newborn child. These babies of mine were Super Metroid (SNES), Suikoden (PS1), Final Fantasy VII (PS1), and the just recently released Final Fantasy XII (PS2).

I really wanted to buy Killzone the day it came out. Nay, that very morning, the second whatever local store was closest opened because I have a thing for post-apocalyptic worlds with all-out wars and chaos and all the hoopla. This first-person shooter had been hyped and hyped again as the "Halo killer for the Playstation2." Finally, a game to quench that thirst because Red Faction (both of 'em) certainly didn't do it.

Well, I'm ecstatic I waited to purchase Killzone until it was a $20 Greatest Hit. Joyously ecstatic, much like a parent feels when their lovechild does not grow up to be a pyscho or a person who collects celebrity-shaped food items. Again, I assume. Because it's far from even being close to a Halo clone, far from being anything like it for the PS2, and just far from being remotely a good game.

The Basics
The story behind Killzone is fairly unique, offering up some interesting concepts that are not really deepened by any exploration later on. It's some unknown year in the future and everything is groovy; humankind has been able to colonize in outer space, there's no such things as alien lifeforms, and everyone is smiling, smiling, smiling. That is until a militant group of humans break away from the utopian society (those rebels!) and head to the planet Helghan to settle down for a few. Unfortunately for them, the atmosphere on Helghan is none too friendly and has transformed these folks into an advanced (if very green-skinned) race known now as the Helghast. There's some resentment, some fighting, some crying, and some building of forces. Now the Helghast are prepared for a full assault against those that shunned them, beginning formally on the planet Vekta, where an unlikely group of four will be waiting to save the world.

I liked this idea, actually. A new race born only from their ignorance of their surroundings. The only part that felt undeveloped was why the Helghast first needed to break off and then why they're such angry bastards. The simple explanation would be due to their living conditions on Helghan; that'd be the simple way out, but I'm looking for depth, for understanding, for some sort of sign that those behind the story took the time to work out these details. It's nice to have a reason to want to stop this assault. Otherwise, what's it all for?

The Good
If anything, Killzone has a spectacular ability to create the perfect atmosphere. Though a lot of the locations look similar, they all feel very different. Take the very first level, a training session to learn the basics. We're deep in the trenches with wire fences all around, smoke towering into the sky off in the distance, gunshots and explosions left and right, all with a swarm of Helghast coming up across the landscape, their eyes glowing a rough amber. You feel like you're there, on the frontline, nervous, stuck in all this destruction. All this chaos. Other levels, like the swamp and later ones within the space station, can create a lot of tension simply from walking around in them. Everything is quiet, which makes every little move you make loud. You'll want to run, but you'll be walking, creeping along as one might in a similar real-life situation. So it has that going for it...

The voice acting, while at times rather flat or highly overdramatic, is surprisingly pretty good. The dialogue between Templar and company is lively (Rico cursed too much for my taste), their frustration and anger clear in their voices. These might be my favorite reloading animations ever, showing off the heat you're packing and making you feel tougher than you really are. The maps, while rather confined, actually feel big, landscapes trailing off in the distance. Every now and then players are able to make a couple choices in which direction to go, but the game is linear and will lead to the same place in the end. The brief spurts of freedom are nice, but they could have been more.

The Bad
Whatever character you pick to play as for the level, the other three become allies, following behind you and providing cover. Unfortunately, they're all morons. Half the time they'd end up shouting phrases like "Be quiet!" in the middle of a bullet fight, the other time was spent shooting walls. Man, could they kill us some walls! Walls ran away in fear just because they knew...they knew my friends would mess them up! There's also some glitches here and there, with the reloading animations going silent and other gameplay actions mucking up. For a game this hyped, it should be bug free. It should be fine tuned. It should have been a lot better than this...

The multiplayer maps are expanded portions of levels from the single-player adventure. They look nice, having some buildings to hide in as well as hills and other high-vantage points. But the battle quickly becomes dumb once someone has hold of a grenade launcher, making it difficult to stay alive long enough to devise an attack plan. I haven't tried the online games yet, but I honestly don't ever see myself sitting down for such a session. I haven't played the game again since I beat it.

We're given the option to choose different characters to play as at the start of each level. There's Captain Templar (all around action hero), Rico (heavy artillary), Shadow (sniper), and Hakha (a half-Helghast himself). But really, each play the same and there are only minimal opportunities to use each's abilities to their full potential. Just play as Rico and blast your way through levels. There is no need to have any other characters.

The Fugly
Please tell me how a grenade launcher to the face does little to no damage to a Helghast, but a shot in the leg can take them down instantly. While we're at it, how come ten shots to the head do nothing as well? It doesn't make sense, and it makes each weapon feel the same. If a shotgun can't take down a Helghast soldier in proper time, why would an assault rifle be able to? Or a pistol? I found it much easier to just use close combat tactics than waste my bullets. The damage system of Killzone is poorly developed. And on occasion, fallen bodies stick through walls or hang in the air showing off bad bits of clipping and unattractive polygons.

The Overall Vibe
Killzone has a lot of potential but feels severly underdeveloped. The setting and atmosphere its brimming with does not make up for its shoddy gameplay, linear structure, and unforgivingly bad glitches. The first few levels are fun, but once you realize that the next ten or so are going to be the exact same thing you begin to get annoyed. So far, the PS3 version looks pretty, but we've only seen an intro video at this point. I'm a little hesistant to judge it this early, but from what I now know of Killzone, meh. Be cautious and pass on this one...

Scary PS3 commercial

So, either I'm scarred for life from this commercial or I'm honestly intrigued to wonder what those Sony execs had for dinner the night before this idea was A-OKed for public showing. I've decided to start a new blog that will be dedicated to all things videogames since they seem to be a big part of my life. There will be reviews, bits of news, rants, pictures of me breaking controllers with a can opener, gift ideas, you name it. So long as it has to do with videogames, I'll be posting about it. Hopefully this will be a worthwhile effort on my part, showing off my ability to give constructive criticism while also being beneficial and entertaining.
